United States Coast Guard Academy

About: The Coast Guard Academy is one of five Federally funded military Service Academies. It is the primary provider of commissioned officers to the United States Coast Guard. All students, called cadets, earn a Bachelor of Science Degree, participate in sports and athletics and a four year leadership curriculum designed to create leaders of character. The Coast Guard Academy is located in New London, CT and has approximately 1000 students and 300 students in the Freshman class. If you want to serve your country and gain valuable leadership experience at the same time, the Coast Guard Academy may be for you!

Admission Info: The Coast Guard Academy is ranked among the nation’s elite undergraduate colleges. This is reflected in our highly selective admission process, which annually identifies the best 300 candidates from a nationwide pool of approximately 6,000 applicants.  Accepted applicants have typically distinguished themselves with proven academic, athletic, leadership and community service accomplishments. They also have an unwavering desire to serve their county and humanity.  To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen of sound moral character, unmarried with no dependents or financial debit, 17-22 years of age on July 1 of the year of entry and a high school graduate or GED recipient.

Scholarship/Financial Aid: There is no tuition and no room and board cost to attend the USCGA. Students pay a onetime $3,000 fee for personal expenses. In return for a tuition-free education at one of our nation’s top choices for higher education, graduating cadets serve five years as an officer in the United States Coast Guard. Stated another way, you’ll have a guaranteed job in leadership waiting for you right after graduation. The majority of our graduates enjoy this experience so much that they voluntarily choose to make a career of the Coast Guard after their five year obligation is complete.

Green Programs:  Yes

Green Initiative:  Protection of Natural Resources- preventing and responding to environmental damage is one of the primary missions of the United States Coast Guard. As a result, several of our cadets and faculty members are involved with green initiatives – some award winning, some used in significant ways beyond the Coast Guard Academy. We offer a major in Marine and Environmental Science. Also, approximately 4 out of 5 USCGA graduates go on to graduate school and may choose an environmental graduate degree- often receiving funding from the Coast Guard to do so.
